Metta Vihara Forest Monastery

As the reputation of Metta Vihara as an ideal Forest Monastery for intensive meditation in a remote and peaceful environment has spread within and outside Europe now, the demand for suitable lodgings has increased as well. Metta Vihara is therefore to be expanded now, so that more Bhikkhus can reside permanently and laypeople can find improved shelter as well."

It is the first German forest monastery for monks in the Theravada tradition and was founded by Ayya Khema in 1997. Advanced practitioners have the opportunity here to develop their meditation skills through an extended stay.

The following is offered:

Group retreats (2-4 weeks)
Individual retreats (the length is according to the request and availability)
Work and meditation

People who take advantage of these offers will, on request, be accompanied in their practice by the residing teachers and/or ordained monk or nun.

"Metta" means unconditional or non-personal love and "Vihara" is a place to dwell.

Devaloka – new monks building open

By building a new dwelling house for monks nearby the major building the monks got the opportunity to live in agreement with the monastic rules as lonesome as possible but also in the near of laymen. The name Devaloka means a place where devas like to stay, too, whose good and secured energy since long is noticeable in the whole area of Metta Vihara.

Since march 2008 three monks are living in Metta Vihara. For Vassa (july-octobre 08) six monks will be here.
